what size square section wrench do i need for my 1.4 ph2 xsara tu3jp

I put "sump plug" into the site search and it would seem the size is 8mm.

Idiots use the wrong or badly worn used socket and nacker the flats, that's why. More often still, they don't seat the tool fully and because of poor access lying on a wet floor, don't rotate the tool squarely and twist it off the edges.

A big square hole is less susceptible.

Is there any case to have both the square hole and the normal bolt shape? Mine looks like that and it feels like the socket will fit as a normal bolt and will do the job without the key.

most do have a 24mm hex on the outside aswell as the 8mm

yep. just use a big socket. sump plug shouldn't be too tight anyway.

That makes sense then. However, I will have to pay some attention as more of the treatment described by Phil has already been applied. I will check it first and then decide how to attack it.
