Xsara VTS Track project # FIN

(1/22) > >>

Jopeti:
Hi there!

This is project is about Citroen Xsara VTS 2,0 (120kW) -99. We are building Xsara for race class called Endurance Saloon (here in Finland). There Endurance Saloon races are 3 to 24 hour (usually 3-6h) competitions on tracks. A team consists of 3 to 8 drivers and limitless amount of mechanics. Cars must be older that 2000 (modelyear) and that limit rises every two years by to years. No turbos are allowed and maximum factory power is 177hp. Race weight of a car depends of size of an engine. For example our Xsara (1998cc) must weight 960kg without driver. Tuning is quite a free. Gearbox, exhaust manifold, intake manifold and air intake must be stock. Other parts (cylinder head, ECU, etc..)

Roughly half of cars in this class are BMW's. E30 325's and E36 323's. There are also many B16 Civic's and Opel Astra's. Some of those cars have been built with some serious money. (>40000e [>>30000£]). We have spent so far about 3000€ to this car. We started this project in autumn 2011.

Testor VTS:
Hi Mate! How lucky you are! Here you have to spend zillion amount of money to be allowed to race...

Great Project!

Tips wise, I've covered this not long ago:

Low costs and lots of laps on track were the main reasons to build track car for Endurance Saloon class. According to Saloon rules, all the car models must be at least 15 years old. Maximum power (reported by manufacturer) is 177hp. The bigger engine your car has (cc), the heavier your car must be. For example my Xsara which has 1998cc engine, must weight 960kg without driver. The only allowed tire is Hankook RS-2. Max width 205 and min profile 50. Wheels either 15 or 16''. Brakes, suspension and ECU are 'free'. Inlet manifold, exhaust manifold, dashboard, bumpers and many smaller things can't be modified.

So there is great amount of work still to be done. Luckily we have at least 4 months before snow melts. Like I told in first post, anything else than oil and filter change won't be done for engine. If we still have money and enthusiasm for racing after next summer, maybe we'll do some further engine tuning.

sounds like the xsara is the ideal car for the series then, just about 15 years old, just under 177bhp, not much more than 960kg once you've stripped it, and the manifolds are good enough already  O0

You are right! What a great moment it was when we first looked under the car and realized that the exhaust manifold isn't something like one in 106GTI for example. Can't wait to see how fast our Xsara is compared to other teams. There are 30-50 cars in race. BMW e30 325's and e36 323's, Honda Civics and Opel Astras are most popular cars. About 95% of cars on track are some of those models. BMW's have over 200hp and nearly 300Nm Torque. On the other hand they heavy and consume lot! All the competing Hondas run with 1,6l 16V engine, tuned over 160hp. Their problem is lack of torque. I don't know if it sound far fetched but I'd expect ~180+hp and ~200+Nm after performance camshaft, slightly modified head, ECU remap, exhaust without cat and performance filter.
