Xsara 04 HDI 90
Floyd:
You may have seen my old VTS journal, which is now complete as it's been sold :( and this has now been replaced with an oil burner mainly to help reduce costs on the daily commute. It got to the stage with the VTS that I was driving it so sedately that I may as well be in a diesel. Although I loved that car it had to go, and it's gone to a good home. The new owner is taking it straight to Spa next week - eek! And then to Donnignton - more eek!
So, onto this car. Pictures later but for now its a bog standard, albeit with tow bar, 2.0 HDI 90. seems to be reasonably quick with all that low down grunt. I'll look into doing the EGR mod and perhaps a tuning box???
The car is very clean but it's not without faults. The throttle feels a little 'dry' making delicate positioning a pain. I'll sort that. The other issue is the voltage regulation is doolally. The last owner changed the alternator and I didn't ask why. I just assumed it was becuase it was faulty. The symptoms are a pulsed headlight effect, in fact all the lights pulse together. Sometimes it's worse than others and comes and goes!
Any ideas here? Could it be dodgy tow bar electrics...?

As for economy, the main reason why I bought it, initially I didn't think it was very good. You see I know how far I should go on a quarter of a tank in the VTS and this was doing similar. Oh dear. I was also driving like Mary Poppins. More oh dear. So I say to myself, just finish the tank, fill up and do the calculation.
This morning I think there is still enough to get me to work and back (60 miles) and I'll crack the 500 miles range. But when I start it the fuel light is on and it's bleeping at me. WTF! Oh well, off to Tesco's but I can only fit 39.7 litres in it no matter how hard I try and it's done 455 miles since I did the same. Blimey! I think that's over 52mpg. OK then, that's not bad and there is still 14 ltrs left in the tank.
The VTS was the other way round - the fuel guage stayed high for ages and then dropped like a stone. The HDI must stay on red forever - not the best way tbh.

Update for those bothered to have a look in here ;) The voltage regulation issue was cured with the fitment of a new bulb. hurrah!!
I'm enjoying the simplicity of it all.
The Wrinkly Ninja:
I think I've encountered that voltage thing before - I seem to remember in one of the older models, you could actually control the charging rate dependant on the wattage of the bulb fitted. Mind you, that's going back a year or three. ;D

Makes sense in a Frenchy way!
